Heel Pain

Find shoes, insoles, and supports engineered to reduce heel pain and restore comfortable, supported walking through better fit, arch support, and targeted cushioning.

Overview

The heel is the largest of the foot’s 26 bones and takes a lot of force with each step, so discomfort can limit activity and daily comfort. While heel pain is often not life-threatening, it can signal conditions like plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinitis. Choosing the right footwear and orthotic support—shoes with a firm heel counter, deep heel cup, proper arch support, and adequate cushioning—helps protect the heel and reduce recurring pain.

Most Common Causes

The two most frequent causes of intense heel pain are:

Plantar FasciitisInflammation of the plantar fascia, the connective tissue that runs from the heel to the front of the foot. Repetitive strain, high-impact activity, and shoes with poor arch support or inadequate cushioning commonly aggravate this condition. Proper arch support and a deep, supportive heel cup are key to relief.

Achilles Tendinitis – Inflammation of the Achilles tendon at the back of the heel, usually from overuse or tightening of the calf muscles. Shoes with secure heel hold, cushioned collars, and a slightly elevated heel can reduce strain on the tendon.

Other Causes

Heel Spurs – Bony growths on the underside of the heel often associated with long-term plantar fascia stress.

Heel Bursitis – Swelling of the bursa behind the heel that can result from pressure or poor heel fit.

Arthritis – Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can contribute to chronic heel discomfort.

Stress Fracture – Small fractures from repetitive impact, commonly seen in runners and high-impact athletes.

Other Relief Options

  • Pick shoes that fit properly—avoid styles that are too tight or too loose in the toe box, forefoot, or heel.
  • Wear activity-appropriate footwear—use supportive athletic shoes for sports and high-impact activities.
  • Stretch the Achilles and calf muscles thoroughly before exercise to reduce tendon strain.
  • If swelling occurs, use ice to reduce inflammation; avoid heat during acute swelling.
